When you think of volunteer work for a nature reserve like the World Heritage site the Wadden Sea you probably think of something like greenery maintenance first. And the nature organisations can always use extra hands ‘in the field’. But if you're not all too handy with a saw or pruning shears, fear not, because there are plenty of other things to do. Whether it's nature or culture that sets your heart aflutter. And whether you want to just help out occasionally, on a project temporarily or more long-term as a member of an organisation.
If you want to help, there are lots of easy ways to get started. There are a number of initiatives you can join. Or on your own if you prefer: there are a lot of areas along the coast littered with plastic that needs to be cleaned up. Do you want to do even more? Then why not become an excursion leader, landscape guide or host(ess) at a visitors centre? As a volunteer, you can check the walking routes to see if the signs are still correct, give guest lectures at primary schools or become a ‘citizen park ranger'. The sky's the limit!
You can participate in counts and measurements to help increase the knowledge of the Wadden or help at events. But you can also volunteer in one of the many village projects in the Wadden area. Projects about darkness, the Atlantic Wall or the restoration of an old cemetery.
