754: Bonifatius was murdered near Dokkum. What the history books don’t mention: this event also marked the start of a special brewing tradition. Dokkum once had 19 breweries and beer is still being brewed here.

The bird hide outside of the dike - the locals call it kiekkaaste - is a wonderful place to spot and photograph birds. Hundreds of dunlins forage on the mudflats and sometimes twites can be spotted on the marshes.
The Peazemerlannen is an 85 hectare nature reserve near the villages of Paesens and Moddergat in north-eastern Friesland. In this transition area between sea dike and mudflats you’ll find everything you might expect from an outside dike marsh area.
Although the four Kroon’s Polders are famous for their natural beauty and abundance of birds, the area is also a water heritage. The Kroon’s polders are named after the legendary P.A. Kroon, Supervisor from the Ministry of Waterways and Public Works who was stationed on Vlieland from 1900.

When Napoleon Bonaparte in Fort Kijkduin visited Huisduinen in 1811 he saw the very strategic importance of Den Helder. He commissioned the construction of Fort Kijkduinen and wanted to make Den Helder a major naval port. It was to become ‘the Gibraltar of the North’.
The Stryperpolder is the oldest polder on the island, one could say the mother of Terschelling's agricultural land. It is still very recognisable as a channel landscape, with the Stryper marsh on the other side of the dike. The polder was named after its oldest settlement, Stryper, constructed on a natural mound formed by the dunes.
