Are you a visitor in the Wadden area and would you like to do something to help nature? You can and it would be greatly appreciated! The Wadden area is the largest and most beautiful nature reserve in the Netherlands. It’s also an extremely vulnerable area. When the MSC Zoe lost containers full of plastic in the North Sea just north of the islands this became even more apparent.
All help in keeping the area clean and strengthening the natural values is welcome. This can be done in many areas and with various organisations. We've made a list for you so it's easy to find where you can roll up your sleeves and spend the day helping the Wadden.
Sometimes it feels like just a drop of water in the ocean, but it really does make a difference. If enough people take part in the clean up campaigns (and don't throw away any new plastic!) then we really can succeed in finally making the Wadden plastic-free.
Staatsbosbeheer also works hard for the Wadden area. A place for seals, crustaceans and all sorts of different birds who come here to rest on their journey to the north or south. And we humans enjoy the tranquillity, vastness and the rich, natural diversity this area has to offer. Volunteers help Staatsbosbeheer maintain the nature areas, create experiences and share the stories nature has to tell. Want to take part?
The dunes on Schiermonnikoog are in danger of becoming overgrown by buckthorn, alder, hawthorn and birch. This is leading to less drifting and it's threatening the original dune flora with extinction. One Saturday each month volunteers go out to help remove this overgrowth.
Bees, butterflies, birds oh my! There are animals everywhere. And it's important that we know exactly where and how many there are. Natuurmonumenten regularly needs volunteers to count particular species in an area. This helps in adjusting policies to protect nature in the best possible way.
