Den Helder
The Mariëndal used to be an agricultural area with straight lines. The nature has taken back control over this area and the sea and wildlife have tranformed the valley.
Mariëndal was a tight and flat bulb land, but now resembles the landscape as it looked in the time when the seawater had free rein. A beautiful, swampy area with low dune tops, water features and the presence of many meadow birds.
Walking tours are regularly organized from sustainability center De Helderse Vallei. A guide from landscape Noord-Holland tells all about the history of this 'old nature'. Lots to see and hear! In the wet nature reserve it is very nice to have boots on.
Tip: bring binoculars.
