OpEwsum is a beautiful historic estate and green project on the outskirts of Middelstum. Visitors are free to walk and cycle through the grounds. Vegetables and fruit are grown here, there is a flower garden, animals, and a cozy tea house—plenty to explore! The estate, featuring the distinctive Donjon, has been restored to its original state, including a greenhouse, historic garden, fruit wall, and plant nursery. OpEwsum is part of the non-profit organization 'WerkPro' and provides a supportive work environment for people that have difficulties with regular work.

In the tea house, delicious treats are prepared using homegrown vegetables and fruit. It’s the perfect place to relax and enjoy the stunning landscape.

The Ewsum family was a lineage of powerful landowners—the first noble family in Groningen. However, they were also fierce warriors and ruthless rulers. In the 13th century, the people of Groningen destroyed their fortress near Middelstum. The family later built a new estate, named Ewsum, but it too suffered under the ongoing conflicts between the Groningers and the Ewsum family. Borg Ewsum was eventually demolished in 1863, leaving only the 1472 gun turret and one of the estate buildings. Thanks to historical records and drawings, the entire estate has now been restored to its former glory. A visit to the grounds offers a glimpse into how people gardened 300 years ago. Descendants of the Ewsum family later also founded the Nienoord estate in Leek.
