When you cycle or walk over the old Wieringen island, or walk through the dunes in Den Helder in the evening or at night, you get a good idea of how dark it will have been in the age of Napoleon for example. These days, it doesn’t get that dark any more. But it is still dark enough to enjoy the stars and to absorb the power of the night. For example in the new star barn at Wieringen Island museum Jan Lont.
At the top of Noord-Holland is the former island of Wieringen. Here you can enjoy the darkness in the very first ‘Star barn’ in the Wadden. Take a seat on one of the benches and let the beautiful starry skies take your breath away. In the village of Stroe people used to escape the darkness. Stroe is on a pilgrims’ route where pilgrims and penitents used to find a place to spend the night before darkness fell.
