In this blog we will take you to Texel, Terschelling and Ameland, three of the five Dutch Wadden Islands that are perfect for a vacation by campervan. Unfortunately, you cannot take a campervan to Vlieland and Schiermonnikoog.

Texel

Texel is a beautiful island in the province of North Holland and is ideal for a vacation by motorhome. The crossing with rederij Teso to the island takes only 20 minutes and is affordable even with an RV. The island has much to offer, from beautiful beaches and dunes to picturesque villages and cozy restaurants. An RV vacation gives you the freedom to explore the island at your own pace. One of the biggest advantages of an RV is that you can choose where to stay. If you are looking for a nice location to camp by camper, there are several options on Texel. For example, you can choose a camper place between the dunes, where you can walk straight from your camper onto the beach. Another option is a quiet farm campsite, where you can enjoy rural life. However, it is wise to make reservations during the high season, as the campsites are quickly fully booked. Wild camping is not allowed on Texel.

If you are looking for a cozy campground with lots of facilities, then Camping De Krim is a good choice. This campground has an indoor pool, a play park and a bowling alley. In addition, the campground is centrally located, making it easy to explore the entire island. Another popular campsite is Camping Loodsmansduin, located in the National Park Dunes of Texel. This campsite has spacious pitches and beautiful surroundings. From the campsite you can make beautiful walking and cycling trips through the dunes.

Another reason to go to Texel by camper is the beautiful nature that the island has to offer. Texel is a real hiking island. There are numerous hiking trails that take you through the dunes, over the beach and through the woods. The National Park Dunes of Texel is highly recommended. Here you can walk for hours and enjoy the tranquility and nature.
Texel is also a great destination for cycling enthusiasts. The island has more than 140 kilometers of cycle paths that take you past the most beautiful spots. For example, you can cycle around the island and enjoy the beautiful views of the sea along the way.

Terschelling

The island of Terschelling is a beautiful destination for a camper trip. With a camper, you have the freedom to explore the entire island and discover its many lovely spots. The island has a lot to offer, including stunning beaches, dunes, forests, and charming villages. One of the highlights of Terschelling is the beach. The beach stretches for kilometers and offers plenty of different spots to relax, swim, or take a walk. Besides the beach, Terschelling also has much natural beauty to offer. The island has an extensive dune area with many walking and cycling paths. The forested area of Terschelling is also worth a visit, especially in the autumn when the leaves change color.

Terschelling also has many cozy villages that are definitely worth a visit. In these villages, you will find charming shops, cafes, and restaurants where you can enjoy a delicious meal or drink. In the village of West-Terschelling, you’ll also find the iconic Brandaris lighthouse.

Here is an overview of campsites where you can stay with your camper. Be sure to contact the campsite in advance to ensure there is space available. From Harlingen, you can take the ferry to Terschelling. Rederij Doeksen has introduced a caravan special. Book the Caravan Special and receive a discount on the total fare for the crossing with your car and camping vehicle (caravan, camper, or folding trailer). The Caravan Special is a partnership between several campsites on Terschelling and Rederij Doeksen.

 

 

 

Ameland

Ameland is a fantastic destination for a camper holiday. With a camper, you can explore the entire island and discover its many attractions. The island has a vast dune area with many walking and cycling paths. The nature reserve Het Oerd is a beautiful area with dunes, beaches, salt marshes, and forests. Here, you can spot many different bird species and other animals.

There are several popular spots on Ameland where you can stay with your camper. One of the most popular spots is the campsite Klein Vaarwater in Buren. This campsite offers various amenities, including a swimming pool, sauna, and wellness facilities. You can also make use of a camper service point here.

In addition, there is the camping Roosdunen in Ballum.This campsite is located close to the beach and offers various facilities, such as an outdoor pool, playground, and sports fields. You can also make use of a camper service point here.

In general, there are plenty of options for staying with a camper on Ameland. It is advisable to book in advance, including for the ferry crossing with Wagenborg.

Vlieland

Unfortunately, it is not permitted to travel to Vlieland with your own vehicle, such as a camper, because the island is car-free and only accessible to residents. Fortunately, you can still enjoy a visit to Vlieland by taking a day trip from Terschelling or Texel, for example, with Rederij Doeksen from Terschelling or Waddenveer De Vriendschap from Texel. This is a unique experience in itself. Alternatively, you can leave your camper at the camper parking area in Harlingen and then rent a bike on Vlieland to explore the entire island in one day.

Schiermonnikoog

Unfortunately, it is not possible to visit the Wadden island of Schiermonnikoog with a camper, as no cars are allowed. However, you can leave your camper at the parking lot in Lauwersoog, where the ferry departs, and visit the island for a day. Schiermonnikoog has been a National Park since 1989, featuring stunning nature composed of various landscapes. It is an ideal destination for a day trip due to its overwhelming natural beauty and the unique island experience you’ll enjoy.
