On April 17th 1945, 18 days before liberation, the German occupiers blew up the IJssel lake dyke of the Wieringer lake with explosives.
On April 17th 1945, 18 days before liberation, the German occupiers blew up the IJssel lake dyke of the Wieringer lake with explosives. Two holes were created which let to the floading of the polder. Besides water, one milion cubic metres of sand flowed onto land. After reclamation of the polder it was decided that the zand would not be removed. Instead they planted a trees that created the Dijkgatsbos (translated to dyke hole woods).
A memorial plaque was placed on the location where the hole excisted.
