Vuurtoren de Lange Jaap
Huisduinen
The tallest cast-iron lighthouse in Europe. Impressive, iconic, and unforgettable.
Take a look
You can see it from afar: the characteristic red tower that watches over the sea and the city. The Lange Jaap is the ultimate symbol of Den Helder. At 63 meters tall and with 16 sides, it towers above everything else. Since 1878, its light has guided shipping safely along the coast.
Feel the power of history and technology
The Lange Jaap is unique in Europe. Not only because of its height, but also because of its history as a defensible lighthouse. The original tower stood at Fort Kijkduin, but proved too heavy and vulnerable. Therefore, Den Helder received this robust successor, complete with loopholes – a first in Europe.
Survived by luck and perseverance
During World War II, things were close. The occupying forces made the tower unusable and even attempted to blow it up. Fortunately, they didn't. Since 1949, the light has been lit again – four flashes every 20 seconds, visible up to 54 kilometers away.
No access, but experience
You can't climb De Lange Jaap, but you can admire it. In Huisduinen, you'll find benches and an information board. Scan the QR code and discover more via Oneindig Noord-Holland. A pleasant stopover with a view and a story.
