Torum is de eerste van het rijtje monumentale boerderijen die in 1875 na inpoldering van de Westpolder werden gebouwd. Na Torum vind je nog Fletum, Nieuw Zeeburg, Manneplaats, Nieuw Midhuizen en Nieuw Onrust. Later verscheen daar tussen nog Klein Warkemaheerd.
Torum is de boerderij waar Sicco Mansholt opgroeide. Hij werd later landbouwminister en -commissaris van de Europese Commissie en werd daarmee één van de grondleggers van de thans dominante industriële landbouw.
Saillant detail is dat Sicco tot inzicht kwam dat het beleid veel negatieve effecten had op mens, dier en milieu. Met een brief, al in 1972, riep hij de beleidsmakers op om het tij te keren. Helaas kwam er nooit antwoord op zijn brief. Hij werd weggezet met de woorden “Sicco je bent toch geen hippie geworden?”. Vicevoorzitter Frans Timmermans van de EU is thans verantwoordelijk voor de Europese Green Deal, die er voor moet zorgen dat Europa voor 2050 klimaatneutraal wordt. Komt er na 50 jaar toch nog een antwoord op Sicco ’s brief?
