The Slachtedijk is a dike that arose as old dikes on polder land were linked together to form a single dike that runs from the village of Oosterbierum on the Wadden Sea coast to Raerd on the banks of what was once the Middelzee estuary. The Slachtedijk is mentioned from around 1500 onwards. Up until the year 2000, the Slachtedijk was the most famous secondary or ‘sleeper’ dike in Friesland.

Starting in the year 2000 and every fourth year since, a marathon has been held on the Slachtedijk. The 42-kilometre dike is exactly the right length for a marathon.
