When you hear the name Lauwersmeer, the wilderness on the border of Groningen and Friesland, birdwatchers start to buzz. More than 100 bird species breed in this area of water and islets, woodland, reed beds and rugged grasslands and hibernate tens of thousands of geese every year.
In spring and autumn, during bird migration, the largest bird festival takes place. Seeing 30,000 barnacle geese fly over in a single day is impressive. Fanciers also like to come to the Lauwersmeer region for special birds, because they know they have a chance of seeing stilt shoots, spoonbills or grey fringing legs. Or the white-tailed eagle, which has been breeding here for a number of years.
Don't forget that there are also seas of orchids in bloom, foxes live there and Scottish Highlanders and Konik horses graze there. But in and around the Lauwersmeer it's mainly the birds that matter. Because they make this national park an irresistible wilderness for every birdwatcher and nature lover. A bird paradise on the former seabed.

These bicycle routes have been determined and driven according to the network of bicycle junctions. The bicycle junction system is a network of continuous routes. The intersections at which the routes meet are called junctions. The bicycle junctions are signposted and at many junctions an information panel can be found with an overview map of nearby bicycle junctions. The bicycle route network is recognizably signposted with green/white signs showing the number of the junction. Via the numbered signs you can cycle from junction to junction. The distances between cycle junctions are indicated in kilometres on the map.
