Wieringen was vroeger een eiland in de Zuiderzee. Het gebied is door de Afsluitdijk verbonden met Friesland en hoort bij de Noord-Hollandse Waddenkust. Omringt door water ligt het voormalige eiland aan het Amstelmeer, IJselmeer en het Werelderfgoed Waddenzee. Eigenlijk is Wieringen een stevige grote berg. Een rots van stuwwallen, door de zee gevormd. En al is Wieringen, dat ontstond in de ijstijd, geen eiland meer: de Wieringers voelen zich nog steeds eilanders. Niet voor niets ben je niet in Wieringen maar óp Wieringen.
De foodwalk Den Oever neemt je mee het landschap in en langs de lekkerste waddenproducten in de omgeving van Den Oever.

The reclamation of the lakes on the south side of Wieringen has a long history. The area got its first dykes around 1400.
Around the 11th century the peat soil around former island Wieringen and Waddensea island Texel was badly eroded by storm floads. From then on the water threatend the lower coastal areas. Dykes were made to protect the land.
Met een mini-fabriek op eigen erf wordt er melk en room uit de eigen melkbottelarij van boer Reijer gemaakt.

In the Michaëls church in Oosterland are changing exhibitions which you can visit. In the church are paintings and in the crypt of the church you will find visual work.
Corn mill De Hoop was probably built around 1654. Since 2015, the mill has been milling again and runs weekly thanks to the efforts of volunteers.

De Voorstraat was ooit een drukke en goed gevarieerde winkelstraat er waren bakkers, slagers en groenteboeren en kruidenierswinkels. Nu is alleen de slager er nog, die gelukkig, om toch te zorgen voor aanbod in de straat wat groente en zuivel verkoopt.
Palingrokerij Kay - Den Oever is a mobile eel smokehouse with a 5-star status. The eel comes from our own catch, IJsselmeer or even from Ireland. For the gourmets there is also smoked salmon and mackerel. During the season, own eel is caught on the Wadden Sea, you can see the traps when you look out to sea at the Monument!
