It is poverty that has preserved the interior of the Mariakerk in Uithuizermeeden. There simply was no money for large-scale maintenance or to replace the monumental woodwork of the pulpit and pews. Anyone who steps inside the church is amazed by its beauty and old splendor. A similar beauty is noticed during the walk around the church. Instead of the virtuoso organ sounds, it is the songs of the cuckoo, reed warbler, and sedge warbler that astonish and lift the spirit.
