Along the rugged edge of the North

Welcome to Het Ziltepad

In this expansive area, church towers serve as beautiful beacons, just as they did for shipping in the past. They can be meaningful for us in various ways. We have already opened the doors for you. The Ziltepad takes you through pristine nature, authentic villages, and ancient churches. Walking and cycling, you will see how nature and cultural history come together here.

Meet Het Ziltepad

Part of Het Ziltepad is now described and runs along the Frisian and Groningen churches from Hijum via Oostrum and Vierhuizen to Uithuizermeeden or vice versa. The route currently consists of nine stages of 15-25 kilometers that you can walk or cycle. It is also possible to explore parts of it. Getting lost is impossible, as writer and guide Fokko Bosker shows you the way in a detailed walking and cycling guide.

On the way

The distinctive churches can be seen from afar. Built on mounds and terps, they tower above the landscape. The churches can also be visited in winter. The door is not always open daily, but you can always pick up the key from the key address and still enter the church. Information is available next to the church door. In the churches, three guides are ready for you: an inspiration and meditation guide for a relaxed and inspired journey, the Ziltepad Menu Guide to get acquainted with local products, and of course the Ziltepad route guide. Along the way, there are various activities you can participate in. On the stage pages, you can see what there is to experience along the route. You can stay in one of the cozy hotels and B&Bs, at a villager's home, or like a true pilgrim in the church.
