Nature campsite De Lange Paal on Vlieland is located between forests and dunes. At night, you'll sleep to the sound of the sea in the background, with the wind rustling through the pine trees. During the day, peace and birds reign supreme.
Camping between forest and dune
Nature campsite Lange Paal is nestled in the heart of the forests and dunes. At night, the soothing sound of the sea and the wind through the pine trees will lull you to sleep. The campsite is 3 kilometers from Vlieland’s only village, Oost-Vlieland, and 3 kilometers in the opposite direction, you’ll find the nature reserve Kroonspolders. From the campsite, you can easily explore in any direction by foot or bike.
Sheltered camping spots
The quiet and spacious campsite offers sheltered, electricity-free pitches and has a well-equipped sanitary building. Lockers are available to charge your phone, and in forester Frederika's cabin, you can find bird identification cards or a book to read peacefully by your tent. If you're bringing your dog, be sure to reserve a pitch where pets are welcome.
Kroonspolders
The Kroonspolders nature reserve, named after a former manager, is located on the west side of the island and borders the Wadden Sea. It's a favorite breeding ground for cormorants, ducks, and spoonbills. While part of the reserve is open to walk through freely, guided tours are available to explore deeper into the polders. Staatsbosbeheer (Dutch Forestry Commission) organizes various excursions on Vlieland.
Spot spoonbills with the forester
The local forester can tell you everything about the beautiful surroundings and their inhabitants. One of those residents is the spoonbill, which can be spotted from April onwards in Kroonspolders and on the mudflats. The spoonbill hunts gracefully, sweeping for sticklebacks and other small fish. Their beaks are lined with thousands of nerve endings, which help them hunt by feel. Try it yourself—catching a fish underwater without seeing much isn’t easy!
