Pieterburen has grown into a renowned village in Groningen and is nationally known among hikers as the starting point of the Pieterpad to the Sint-Pietersberg near Maastricht. The village also owes its fame to the arrival of the seal sanctuary in 1971 and serves as a departure point for mudflat hiking tours. The Petrus Church and Domies Toen form a calming center amidst the hustle and bustle. Its location on a young salt marsh ridge near the Wadden Sea coast at the northern edge of the Hogeland makes Pieterburen an ideal stop on Het Ziltepad.
